In the preseason, the Washington Redskins were predicted by many to finish with the worst record in the NFC East. In fact, many people thought the Redskins might finish with the worst record in the NFL.
Well, they didn’t. Washington went 9-7, won its division and was one of the best teams in football during the second half of the year. The Redskins host – yes, host – Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers (10-6) this Sunday at 4:40 p.m. ET.
“It’s so crazy,” Redskins punter Tress Way said on CBS Sports Radio’s After Hours with Amy Lawrence. “We’re hot right now. We’re on a four-game win streak, we’ve won three of them on the road. We knew we were a good team; we just had to get over some humps. Now we’re looking at each other like, ‘Man we’re pretty good. We’re playing some pretty good football right now.’ And to know that we’ve made it into the playoffs and it’s win-or-go-home, (that’s all that matters). It is really a cool feeling. I get texts from family an friends multiple times a day. I’m very thankful and very excited.”
Washington started 2-4 and 3-5 but won six of its final eight games, including four straight. The only two losses during that eight-game stretch came at Carolina and against Dallas.
“Obviously in the NFL, you’re always under the microscope; everybody’s trying to nitpick you,” said Way, 25. “But ultimately – and I know it sounds funny and I’m a young guy and I get excited real easily – but man, everybody on the team, we’re all close friends. We all hang out together. Everybody’s always constantly laughing and dancing in the locker room. So the team camaraderie has been there all season long. Well, now that we’re winning and we’re rolling, (we knew earlier in the year that we were) right there. It’s just a couple plays. We got to find a way to eliminate some mental mistakes or we got to lock some players down. We got to step up at big points in the game. Well, then it started happening. And just like anything else, when you get the offense going and you realize you can make those plays and you can win those games – I don’t want to come across arrogant or cocky, but I really wouldn’t want to play us right now. It’s kind of fun. We’re having a good time.”
Washington, it is worth noting, avenged its Monday Night Football loss to the Cowboys in a big way this past Sunday. The Redskins were up 21-0 in the first quarter and cruised to a 34-23 win in Dallas.
“We’re rolling right now,” Way said. “That momentum, this is a real thing. The team is clicking. We feel like we can’t miss. Everybody’s having fun, guys are hitting people in the mouth, guys are making unbelievable plays, Kirk is throwing the ball anywhere he wants, our defense is shutting everybody down – it’s a fun part of football. Obviously this is my second year. Last year we were 4-12. This year, going to the playoffs, four-game win streak, winning five of the last six – man, this is some fun football to be a part of right here.”
